Happy New Year! Favorite Posts of 2008

I can’t believe 2008 is already over! It was another crazy, but great, year. Work has been as busy as ever for us. Family and friends were getting married left and right and having babies. Our apartment almost burnt to the ground (well, sort of). I got ambushed and made over on a moving train (still waiting for it to air on TLC!). Then, of course, there were all the extracurricular activities (a trip to Texas, 2 seasons of kickball, etc.).

All of this and so much more sometimes made it difficult to find time to blog, but I’m so glad we did and, to wrap up 2008, I wanted to highlight a few of my favorite posts from the year. It was quite difficult to narrow a list down, but here it is:

Again, hard to pick out just a few, but it is New Year’s Eve and, honestly, I’m eager to get off this damn computer, so think it is best to wrap it up for the night We’ll have to wait to see what is in store for us in 2009 – and I’m looking forward to blogging about it.

Curb Your Enthusiasm will have a 7th Season!

I just found out about this - last month Larry David confirmed that there will be a 7th season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and it will premier at the beginning of 2009!

It’s the funniest damn show on TV. We don’t get HBO anymore so I didn’t see any of season 6 when it first aired, but I got the Season 6 DVD a couple months ago, and Elicia and I ended up watching the whole thing in one sitting…its the best one yet. The underlying plot line that runs through the whole season is that a family displaced by hurricane Katrina comes to live with Larry and Cheryl. The many exchanges between Larry and Leon, one of the new characters in this family, are freakin’ hilarous! They are also very explicit (you’ve been warned)…this YouTube compilation has the Best of Leon and Larry I dare to you to try and not laugh when Leon says, “I gets mine, Larry. I brings a ruckus to the ladies.”

Christian the Lion = YouTube Star

In 1960, a baby lion was purchased by a couple of guys (John Rendall and Ace Berg) in a department store (yeah – I guess they sold lions at department stores back then). They named him Christian. For years they raised him as their pet, but when Christian got too big to care for, John and Ace worked with a conservationist to reintroduce Christian back into the wild in Africa. After a year, John and Ace went back to Africa to find Christian, even though many people told them that the he would never recognize them and that it would be too difficult to find him.

Well, they did! And the reunion is incredibly touching. How do I know? Well, videos of it have surfaced  on YouTube after over 30 years since then and have gained MILLIONS of views in recent weeks! Check out a re-mixed version of the video for yourself below (just hit the play button). In addition to being on The Today Show, video footage of the reunion also appeared on The View recently. This is just another example of how powerful user-generated content and YouTube can be!

As the below video says “love knows no limits and true friendships last a lifetime.” I can’t help but tear up a little watching this video. Simply incredible. (Sigh) I can’t wait to get a dog one day

Summer Redneck Games – Next Weekend, Y’all!

When the Olympics were held in Atlanta 13 years ago, a local radio station from East Dublin, GA wanted to draw some of the Olympic crowds to their little town. What could they possibly do to accomplish this? Create the “Summer Redneck Games”, of course!

A week from today, on July 5th, the 13th Annual Summer Redneck Games will commence. With around 10,000 attendees each year, it has grown into quite the shin-dig. Rednecks compete for the respect of their fellow Southerners and trophies appropriately made out of crushed beer cans (something to proudly display on their mantels – although, I’m not sure trailers have mantels).

A local asphalt layer (who happens to have no teeth and goes by the name of Elbow) is the Games’ mascot. Every year, Elbow kicks off the festivities by using the Redneck Games torch to light the Ceremonial Grill.

 

The games include everything from the Mud-Pit Belly Flop (competitors are judged on beauty of form and size of splash), Bobbing for Pigs Feet (ugh!), Dumpster Diving, the Armpit Serenade, Redneck Horse Shoes (with toilet seats!), and a Seed Spittin’ Contest. In addition, they have live bands and other forms of entertainment like swimming in the watering hole, Redneck Idol, and the Miss Redneck competition.

YouTube.com – 2007 Video Awards

Every once and awhile you’ll stumble across a brilliant video on YouTube. Sometimes an ambitious director devised some wonderful visual concept and then carried it out in an elaborate production. Other times some shocking or hilarious person or event was captured on video by chance. 

The winners of the YouTube.com 2007 video awards are a mixture of both produced and spontaneous videos. A few of my favorites include:

“The RIGHT Way” – Road Trip Video Contest

Corporate-sponsored contests are all over YouTube! The formula is simple – company pays YouTube lots of money to secure a prime spot for their company on YouTube, thousands of aspiring online video stars submit videos with content meeting the contest criteria, prizes (often big prizes) are awarded to the best video/s.

A new contest called “Sketchies 2″ is sponsored by Toyota to promote the new Corolla. The grand prize is $25K and $15K in video equipment – pretty sweet! My brother Eric and his Brooklyn roomie threw together a great video. Check it out below. Good luck Eric!
